Domains
Selecting the right domain name is one of the most important decisions you will make when building your web presence. A good domain name will be easy to remember, recognisable and will lead to many people visiting your site.
Not sure what domain name extension to use (.com, .org, .com.au, etc)? The first thing you should do is work out what you can use. Not all extensions are available for all people.
Don’t forget that you will need to host the domain somewhere. If you don’t have any hosting yet, make sure you purchase it while ordering your domain registration.
Below we have put together some information regarding some of the domain extensions available.

.biz | business | Any person or entity is permitted to register, however registrations may be challenged later if they are not held by commercial entities in accordance with the domain’s charter. |
.com | commercial | Any person or entity is permitted to register. Though originally intended for use business entities, for a number of reasons it became the “main” top level domain for domain names and is currently used by all types of entities. |
.net | network | Any person or entity is permitted to register. Originally intended for use by domains pointing to a distributed network of computers. |
.org | organization | Any person or entity is permitted to register. Originally intended for use by non-profit organizations, and still primarily used by some. |
.com.au* | commercial | The .com.au domains are the most popular domains amongst commercial entities in Australia. It helps to identify your entity as being based in Australia, serving an Australian market. ABN/ACN/ARBN, etc is required. Additionally, other requirements must be met as stated by the .au Domain Administration Ltd (.auDA). See here for further information. |
.net.au* | commercial | The .net.au is similar to .com.au domains. It helps to identify your entity as being based in Australia, serving an Australian market. ABN/ACN/ARBN, etc is required. Additionally, other requirements must be met as stated by the .au Domain Administration Ltd (.auDA). See here for further information. |
.org.au* | organization | The .org.au domains are reserved for charities and non-profit organisations, eg. clubs, churches, community, welfare, and charity type groups. |
.asn.au* | associations | The .asn.au domains are normally reserved for incorporated associations, political parties, trade unions, sporting and special interest clubs. |
.id.au* | individual | The id.au domains are especially designed for individuals who are Australian citizens or residents. NO ABN/ACN/ABRN/ARSN is required. |
.co.nz** | Commercial | Organisations pursuing commercial aims and purposes |
.net.nz** | network | Organisations and service providers directly related to the NZ Internet |
.org.nz** | organization | Not-for-profit organisations |
